Seeking some advice please on how to proceed with regards to my housing situation. Has anyone been in the situation where they have declared themselves homeless to a housing association/local council? What happens when you do that?
My husband and I have a rented housing association property and at a meeting with WA it was advised that one option could be to declare myself homeless/fleeing DV and they offered to write a letter to the HA.
I have two children, one is disabled. In an ideal world I would be rehoused in a nice 3 bedroom property with my children. I’m scared about where I will end up and will I be able to stay in my current home while waiting to be rehoused?

I was classed as homeless leaving DV whilst on a joint tenancy. Council were supportive, arranged calls when safe to do so we even had to abruptly end one mid-call as he turned up and they checked in on me after. I stayed in the property until rehoused which took a few months but give them a call, not every council is great but fingers crossed yours will be x

Hi Bananaboat. Thank you for replying. That’s good that the council were supportive. Thats reassuring too that you could stay in the property while waiting to be rehoused. Were you given temporary accommodation or long term accommodation? Were you given much choice about where your new accommodation was? I’m hoping to stay in my area as my children are in the local school. How did you find your new accommodation? I’m very worried about where I will end up especially as I will have my children with me. Thanks so much and sorry for all the questions!

I was originally classed as Band 4 so no chance but after being classed as homeless they moved me to Band 2 (out of 4) and I bid on properties. I guess it all depends on how safe you are, those months before leaving where really tough but the council were a great help
