So I went to the solicitors yesterday and told them I want to leave my husband. Gave them some examples of why I want to leave (swearing, punching walls, throwing things). They’ve told me I’m a victim of DA and need to speak to the police. I’ve also been told though that my husband can stay in the house and there may be a time when we’re living under the same roof whilst separated. I’m really scared about telling the police and making it a whole lot worse, I’d be seriously concerned about mine and my children a safety if they charge him I’ll never be able to go back home with him it. I tried to speak to local DA charity but I’m not high risk enough for me to engage with their services. Did anyone go to the police to just log an incidence and it was ok?

      Hi Hopeful2024,

Thank you for your post. I’m sorry to hear about your situation. Its understandable that you are concerned about talking to the police- your safety is really important. It will depend on the case and the police will want to ensure that both you and your children are safe. You could call the police on 101 and ask to speak to an officer from the domestic abuse unit about your next steps.

You mentioned the advice around living together whilst separated- I would suggest looking into other options as separation can increase your risk and there is no good reason for you to endure living with him during that time. You could contact Rights of Women for free legal advice. The Family law advice line offers advice on DV & abuse, divorce and civil partnership dissolution, relationship breakdown, issues relating to children. The Criminal law advice line offers advice on sexual offences, DV and harassment, police and criminal justice system, rights of victims, witnesses and defendants and criminal injuries compensation.

      Best Wishes

      Lisa
