I’ve been trying to leave my husband and rent somewhere for almost a month. There is only a handful of houses available in my area and every open viewing I go to there’s about 20 other people. I’m on a low salary which is probably going against me too. I put a note on my form saying I will be getting help from UC.
I just feel totally deflated and am seriously considering just giving up.
I went to see an apartment a few weeks ago. It was a good size but there’s no garden. My son plays football and is always in and out kicking a ball about. It’s still showing available. I know if I apply and get it my husband will use it against me. He’ll use that to try and keep our son at home with him which he has always threatened me with. I’m currently waiting on an agent getting back to me about a house we saw last week but who’s going to give it to a single parent when there’s couples applying too?
Have spoke to the council & will be put on a housing list. It could takes months to get allocated because the demand is so high.
      I’m emotionally & physically exhausted.

      Hi Littlepixie,

Thank you for sharing with us. It is understandable you feel emotionally and physically exhausted trying to find housing. It is a lot to deal with. Do you still have support from your local domestic abuse service?

In case it is helpful you could contact Shelter for housing advice and to explore any options or rights you have. Shelter offer free and confidential housing information, support and legal advice on all housing and homelessness issues: https://england.shelter.org.uk They have a live chat service, and an emergency helpline available on 0808 800 44 44 (8am-8pm weekdays, 9am-5pm weekends).

      Best wishes,

      Lisa
