I called the mortgage lender and they informed me that a number of payments have defaulted and repossession is the next step. He has ignored the letters. One thing is that he has never told them that I don’t live with him and he has told them that he has kids that will be thrown out on the street. They live with me.

You need to get some legal advice on this. Call citizens advice or Rights of Women. Most solicitors offer a free initial consultation. If your name is on the mortgage then it’s joint debt and you don’t want your credit rating to be affected. Some lenders are offering help because of corona. Maybe a payment break.

Sounds like a nightmare. Are you named jointly on the mortgage?
The questions you will probably be asked by a solicitor are:
      Are you married?
Are you both on the deeds?
Is there a restriction registered against the property on the Land Registry? This means that if the other tries to sell or remortgage you will be notified (do they know your new address?).
Do you know if you are Joint Tenants or Tenants in common? The latter protects your share in the property.
Definitely ask for a mortgage holiday from the provider – they’re still giving them for three months, I think, might depend on the lender.
Definitely get some legal advice as soon as you can.
