I am divorcing my husband & finally got to the point where I was hoping to move soon. He has been sending me abusive emails. He’s not threatening me but the emails are very long personal attacks full of swearing and rage and allegations about me & he is also trying to stop me leaving, or taking anything from our home, including our child’s things. Should I log the emails with the police? is there any point? If I should then how? And should I tell him I have done that so he backs off? He has never been physically violent, just lots of emotional abuse and control.

      Hi wishihadcake,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for posting. I hope you find this to be a useful space where you can share support with other women who understand.

Logging incidents like the emails with the police can be helpful in building up a picture of his behaviour. Even if each incident doesn’t reach the threshold for the police to take action, seen together it can show the pattern of his abuse. You can report the emails by calling 101, which is the non-emergency number for the police. In some areas, the police will have a specialist domestic abuse officer or team, so you could ask about speaking to them. If you need any support speaking with the police, you should be able to get some advocacy from your local domestic abuse service. It’s important that the decision about whether to report or not is your own. You might find the information in Rights of Women’s criminal law guides helpful.

If you feel like you are in need of some additional support, you could chat to a Women’s Aid worker in confidence via our Live Chat service (8am – 6pm weekdays and 10am – 6pm weekends/bank holidays). They won’t tell you what to do, but can discuss your situation and signpost you to other support that’s relevant for you.

Do keep posting to let us know how you’re getting on.

      Best wishes,
