ParticipantHi, girls. Got a council house on opposite side of town to perp. Our old house is waiting to go up for sale. Ex stringing it out (detail removed by Moderator) Anyway, my dilemma is this – been on housing benefit over summer as no job. Got a full time job now but housing benefit has stopped and I don’t get paid for first month. They won’t give me a discretionary housing payment as I am no longer entitled to housing benefit. Getting nasty letters from them about evicting me as I am an introductory tenant and not paying rent. I will always be one month in arrears. I have explained I will start paying when I get paid and that it will always be in arrears but they won’t listen. Any ideas as to how I can get help with first month’s rent?

ParticipantContact Shelter. They might have a way out.
I have very good experiences with them. -

ParticipantThanks, Ayanna. I will contact them on Monday. It seems everywhere I turn, someone is making it hard for me to return to work.

ParticipantIt feels like that.
Hang in there and persevere on all you want to do. You will get there.

ParticipantYes contact Shelter and also CAB. Maybe you could also write to the council explaining your situation including the domestic abuse, it seems incredibly unfair for you to be punished for finding work. If you have supportive parents another potential option is borrowing the first month’s rent off to get the landlord off your back until you get your first paycheck, as ideally you don’t want any arrears because you want to have a good credit rating for if you ever rent a new place, get a mortgage or anything else on credit, even a mobile phone. One other option I’ve just thought about is possibly asking for an advance from work just enough to cover the rent, not sure if this is possible but if you explained the situation they might be able to help depending on the company/organisation. Finally, you could ebay any spare items to raise some quick funds, I have been doing a mass declutter and have managed to sell several things I don’t need anymore which is really helping with my house move.
Good luck with it and I hope it works out, very well done for finding work! 🙂

ParticipantThanks all for your replies. My only option was to ask rent people if I could pay so much a month until I was up to date. They agreed, thankfully.
