So after a year of doing very little in poor helth, today I donned my trainers and went for a run, it was only around 500m but I ran all the way, my daughter came as well and she found my lack of fitness hilarious; while I almost keeled over.

Then we got on bikes and cycled to the shop (detail removed by moderator).

Have eaten well today, no junk and took my vits.

It’s amazing how much better I feel – looking after self and giving me what I need.

Have decided to try and do the run most days, then I will see if my level of fitness improves; so when I get to the top of the hill wthout almost dying I’ll run a bit more and so on.

Feels like this has been such a long time coming, but now I’ve made the start! Yeehaa!!

Ahh that’s so nice ☀ well done for finding the energy! Seeing our kids happy is such a massive incentive isn’t it. I read something recently by Judith Herman, she’s a psychiatrist who specialises in trauma. She said it was amazing how some people she works with, who’ve experienced such horrors respond so well to the smallest amount of understanding and affection. I think this is something positive we can take from our experiences. We can do so much with a little bit of love.
Hope your next run is even better Xx

Hi @fizzylem, what great positive news to read. Sometimes we feel we’re never going to see the day when well do little things like you just did. You’ve just reaffirmed that it will happen, it just needs time.
Best wishes for your next 500m💞

Well done! You should be really proud of yourself for every step you take in the right direction, no matter how big or small.

It’s also so good that you already feel better in yourself! Definitely something worth celebrating, and I’m glad that you shared this with us.

      Ah that’s fab Fizzylem 🙂

I used to love running, something so empowering about pushing ourselves physically and getting fit… I’ve really fallen out of shape especially the last year as I’ve become more depressed etc .. hoping this year I can turn things around like you! Well done , keep going xx

      This is lovely ☺.
Have you read the book Jog On, How Running Saved My Life by Bella Mackie? It’s a great book and it inspired me to get back in to running.
      Keep going and enjoy xx

Go you! Although 500 meters, not 500 miles as I read it first, whilst sitting here eating Easter egg for breakfast hahaha.

Seriously though, that’s brilliant. I also love that your daughter came with you, and you were able to laugh together.

I have emphysema now so won’t be doing much in the way of running as I heal, but I’m hoping to go back to Tai Chi classes and start gentle swimming/water exercise sometime soon. Right now it’s slow, ambling dog walks on the beach.

For everyone’s info, there’s a scheme called The National Exercise Referral Scheme. Your GP can refer you to it and you get a coach/physio who helps you work out a safe, suitable exercise plan, and free classes as well as entry to places such as swimming pools and gyms.

Our particular circumstances mean we do qualify to be referred, as we become isolated, depressed, in low health generally, and need the push sometimes, of an appointment, to make us get up and do it. It has a bit of a waiting list I understand, but definitely something worth exploring.

I’ll wave at you with my backpack full of snacks from the sidelines of your next Marathon. 🙂

PMSL! 500 miles!! While eating Easter egg. Thanks for your message ER.

I’ll enquire about the referral, I usually end up feeling dismissed or not heard at my surgery, I asked if there were any yoga classes I could join last year, I left feeling rather silly for having asked the question. I have fibromyalgia and it feels like ‘cant do anything for you with this’ is attached to the label by most of the GPs, and that every symptom I have is also down to the fibro. Sigh. I wanted an investigation on my neck, was sent to physio and told I’d need another referral for this problem, but we could work on my hip problem?! A problem I didn’t think I had. Still, the one good thing to come out of it is that I know it’s all down to me to help me, which I think is a good mindset when it comes to health.

Ive been thinking about joining a gym and going to their yoga classes, its a huge cost when on benefits though. I simply dont even have the space to roll out a mat where I live just now. So unless I do sign up I’m stuck and do nothing again. Hence the run, something I can do. However much I hate it! I dont like any exercise really, never have, part of the problem hey; but I seem to be able to get in the zone and tell myself to just get on with it, just get it done, which I have found again recently at last; day 7 today of the run, it’s getting ‘slightly’ easier, but think I’m a long way off doing a bit more yet, not going to think about that, just focus on doing the 500m everyday and thats it for now, my body will tell me when I’m ready for more hey.

Emphasema sounds tough ER, sorry to read this; I really do hope you find lots of ways to help. Ambling on the beach is certainly good for the soul and wellbeing hey, any movement is better than none; I had one GP say to me once that a walk that gets your heart above a normal beat 5 times a week is enough to keep the heart healthy. Taichi and swimming sounds like a great plan. Good luck with things x

Hi fizzy, if you are in receipt of any benefits and you have a council run sports centre you will get reduced rates for classes, gym etc. Keep up the good work🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Wow well done for getting out and going for a run Fizzylem. I admire you, it must feel so empowering.

I was very depressed last year and put on a lot of weight. I’m feeling better now thanks to therapy, DV support group and a mindfulness course, but OMG I am soooo unfit. I’m now back at work and trying to eat more healthily, but have yet to summon up the energy to start exercising.

So a huge well done to you!

      Love Copperflame xx

Cheers hun! Well I admire you for getting back to work! And all the personal development you’ve worked on! Work seems a long way off for me yet. We have to choose what to focus on hey, one bit at a time, and build up a good balance – sounds to me like you are almost on the last leg! I think when I start eating healthily its not long until I start the exercise, you need good fuel inside you before you exercise hey and the fact your caring about what you eat will lead into doing some exercise nicely, you’ll see.

You’ve achieved so much Copperflame! Warms my heart to read – no good woman can be held down forever hey – onwards and upwards x
