ParticipantHi Worrywart,
I don’t usually watch Corrie but happened to have it on tonight and you are right! Once I saw it I had to research it and it’s going to be a new storyline exploring coercive control. According to the media they have worked closely with Women’s Aid and others.
That scene felt way too close to home, it really got to me. I have experienced the exact same thing 😟

ParticipantI haven’t watched or followed this soap but feel exited that domestic abuse charities have been approached by script writers to raise awareness of coercive controlling behaviour. What a creative way to educate the mass population and give a voice to many victims am sure. Probably the calls will now even increase more at Women’s Aid.
This just made my day! Thanks for sharing Worrywart 👍 -

ParticipantHere an extract from the press release
“
The Press Association reports that Coronation Street consulted UK domestic abuse charities Women’s Aid and Independent Choices Greater Manchester while writing the story. The soap’s producer, Iain Macleod, said: “Many thousands of people feel trapped in relationships with someone who claims to love them but who is actually taking them apart piece by piece, isolating them from friends and family and locking them in an invisible prison of fear and insecurity.
“I hope this story will help anyone going through similar experiences in the real world by highlighting that feeling undermined, belittled, controlled or intimidated by your partner is never okay.

ParticipantI thought I was projecting when Geoff seemed to be showing controlling behaviour right from the get-go. (How did he get to move in so quickly?!) It’s made for uncomfortable viewing – the subtle gaslighting, crazy making, isolating. And all the while looking like a top bloke.
Shelley King (Yazmeen) heard a radio program about this kind of abuse, then asked Corrie producers to develop the storyline. It’s going to be powerful stuff.
