ParticipantSo I’ve made the step to get out. The problem is I don’t have enough income to pay rent in a property in my own right. So I need benefits. Problem is, I can’t claim until I’m out the house and I can’t sign a rental agreement without proof of income.
How do I make this work?

ParticipantThis is why I’m still in the marital home. Because of UC, you can’t find out how much you’ll get on benefits as it is based on the house you are in and obviously the people in it! Yet how can you get somewhere to live through the council, with no means of supporting yourself. UC takes about 6 weeks, so straight away you’re in arrears with rent, council tax, no way to pay for heating and lighting, never mind food.. and they wonder why we stay.😡

ParticipantHi, okay, your post has forced me to contact local housing in order to find out more info. Not going to know until we ask are we. Anyway, the girl said that on the day we’re offered a property, that’s the day we can start our claim for UC, knowing the circumstances(leaving abusive relationship), they know that benefits take a while to be processed and are prepared to wait for everything you be sorted. So that jyst leaves getting enough money to pay for heating and food until benefits get sorted. So it’s a case of getting a leaving fund started. Could you manage to put money away and leave it with someone you trust?
Knowing this has put my mind at rest a bit too.

ParticipantI’ve spoken to the council and not got much info. I’ve been advised to ‘present myself as homeless fleeing domestic abuse’ and they have a duty to house me. Still no mention of how I’m supposed to pay for all that but it looks like I’m just going to have to put my faith in someone else to make it all

ParticipantHi Smith, see my post above. As being classed as homeless, you’re not charged fir rent heating, council tax. It gives you an address to apply fir benefits. I think you can be in a homeless flat/in It got up to a year.
