Hi does anyone know if we have any way of changing our childrens surname without the fathers permission in UK? HES ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE BUT No contact order in place until certain things have being completed by him but he’s done nothing for (detail removed by Moderator) years? Don’t see why my child should suffer in his name, thank you 🙂

It would be worth your while contacting someone regarding the law on this, as if a change of name will make them safer, or that you were coerced into giving your baby his surname, there could be grounds for you to change it.

Although, as far as I’m aware if you hold parental responsibility and his is removed, then he has no say in this, again, best to check with a legal consult, you could try Rights of Women, although it could take some time to reach them, they would be able to answer this without incurring any costs for you.

      warmest wishes

      ts

      Dear Nocontactqueen,

The Rights of Women’s website has a section regarding changing your child’s surname under ‘Children and the Law: when parents separate.‘ You can scroll down to the sub heading ‘Changing your child’s name’. If you cannot get permission you can apply for a ‘specific issue order’.

      All the best,

      Lisa
