After completing the housing application forms several weeks ago I phoned my local council today who said as the reason for my application is DV I’d need to complete a self referral form, which I did after the call, and then have an interview with a housing officer. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what that involves and if there’s anything I need to gather or prepare in advance? The form said they might contact people, doctors, other organisations etc, which is fine but they won’t contact my soon to be ex will they?! Not sure if I’m clutching at straws hoping the council will rehouse me. Any advice welcome.

Contact your local women’s aid. They came with me to the interview. I don’t recall being asked about the details of the abuse, just what my requirements were. I wanted to take my teenage son so wanted 2 bedrooms which they wouldn’t give me because he was classed as an adult so I looked at renting privately but my ex assume and was removed from the marital home. Awful but solved my problem.

I’d suggest women’s aid as well. A letter from them in support of your application will carry some weight.
