My first time to post but I don’t know what to do. I have been with my partner for (detail removed by Moderator) years and the relationship has deteriorated over the last few years. He says he has mental health issues but will not speak to a doctor and expects me to be able to deal with these alone. I am not allowed to tell anyone what it is like at home. He has no friends and does not work so feels lonely but blames me for this. I work but my colleagues do not know anything about my home life. He has not seen his family for over (detail removed by Moderator) years and shouts at me about why they do not want to see him. He is always telling me not to say something to upset him and I am getting quieter and quieter and not saying anything for fear of upsetting him. He does not like the neighbours but we cannot afford to move. (detail removed by Moderator) we had another argument and he told me that my life was not worth living as I have nothing to live for and why should I hope anything will get better as it will not. He often tells me if I was not with him nobody would want to know me. On (detail removed by Moderator) he told me I was dog s**t, we could not have children and he told me I would have made a terrible mother. I don’t know what to do, I want to leave but scared as he keeps telling me he will take his own life.

      Hi Cookies,

Welcome to the forum. When you say things have deteriorated do you mean they’ve escalated? It’s very common for abusers to threaten suicide if they feel us pulling away.

I don’t want to alarm you but you need a safe exit plan. Don’t discuss your plans with him. Get legal advice and open up to your GP, friends or family. You’ll need a strong support network.

If he threatens suicide call the police – they have a duty to respond and will involve mental health professionals if necessary.
