I spoke to someone today who found me the number for a refuge. It would be moving to another place, leaving behind my job, home and pets. I’m hesitant obviously but so badly want to make the call to stop all of this.
How does this work? If I leave my job then I’m penniless. Help me understand please

      Hi Alohamontgomery,

Well done for taking that step of reaching out to find out about your options and getting the number for a refuge. Change and the unknown are both scary even in the best of circumstances. The refuge should be able to help you with setting up your claim for benefits, the cost of refuge will be covered by the housing part of that. Women usually stay in refuge for around 6 months and you would have support on site to help you start to move forward. Part of that support would be to help you find somewhere more permanent to move on to.

Depending on what kind of pets you have and on the refuge, there’s some possibility you could take them with you, or you might be able to arrange pet fostering for the time that you’re there. The refuge may be able to help you arrange that, but you can find organisations that provide pet fostering on our “Useful links” page. Refuges differ, so it’s hard to give any definites, but if you call and speak to them then you can ask any questions that you need to help you feel comfortable. For general information, there are some Refuge FAQs covered in The Survivor’s Handbook.

      Take care and keep posting,
      Lisa

Those sound like big changes and the anticipation is scary. I relocated and sometimes wonder how my recovery might have been if I’d stayed in my local area.

It’s difficult to give up the security of a job but hopefully you will soon find a new one and have all the financial and emotional support that you need in the meantime.
