I managed to leave my husband with our children a few months ago after an abusive relationship lasting over three decades. A few of my relatives and close friends have mentioned they think I might have PTSD, my GP says it’s too soon to investigate this. Do any of you have experience of this?

It’s very common for women to have ptsd after abusive relationships. I think it’s important to wait a suitable amount of time before entering therapy for this. I had about 5 months of being free until the ptsd was fully blown. Only when we are safe can we stsrt to process it, i was so lucky and had trauma focused cbt from nhs self referral. Get onto this asap because the waiting list can be long. Sometimes you benefit from waiting though. Living with ptsd is like limping around on a broken leg. It’s torture! The best thing I ever did was process it in therapy. X*x

First things first well done for getting you and your kids safe after so long that’s amazing I was in the same boat and know how hard it is. Remind yourself how far you have come ! Secondly it takes time to recover and it is normal to not feel okay at first slowly things will tho – they really will! Google PTSD look up NHS or Mind. The most important thing is to get support irrespective of a diagnosis or not. What is your GP suggesting to offer you support? Have you support from womens aid? Keep leaning on those around you and posting here amongst those who understand x

Thank you both this is very helpful. I am undergoing a short counselling course at the mo and my IDVA is trying to sort some longer term specific DV support for me. I am just trying to get through each day at the mo but it’s already easier than trying to do so while living with an abuser
