My husband has served me with a divorce, which was a complete shock. I have to respond within the next (timeframe removed by Moderator), and I have no idea what I should do. I have tried phoning Rights of Women family law helpline and couldn’t get through. I can’t get any urgent legal advice, and citizens advice are supporting me although they can’t advise on how to respond to this divorce. I have no income, am totally financially dependent and there is a history of abuse. Please can anyone advise on just completing this by the deadline as it looks like I am going to have to do it on my own, and I’m worried about making a mistake. My husband has indicated he doesn’t want this to go to court and given the history I am worried about this .

oh bless your heart this must be so stressful for you – are you in contact with your local da service at all.  i wonder if they are able to help with anything at all – especially by recommending a solicitor.  i suppose you have tried any & every solicitor possible to see if you could have an emergency initial appointment.  its such a shame that the rightsofwomen are only open such a few hours as it is always good to keep trying.  are you absolutely sure you only have (timeframe removed by Moderator) to respond – i have no idea whether this is true or not its just it sounds so very unreasonable as it hardly gives you any time at all to make contact with who you need to

i really hope someone (even lisa) sees your post & can offer the correct advice.  and it doesnt surprise me to hear that your partner wishes to control you & is trying dictate exactly how this goes – it must feel extremely unsettling for you.  stay strong wont you x

Firstly go to the Rights of Women website and read their legal guides. There may be something on there about divorce.

If you have been served with a divorce petition then it should come with instructions of what you need to do and the timescale. I’m a bit confused by (timeframe removed by Moderator).

A divorce petition will now usually be no fault and just paperwork. You also need to sort out children and finances though. I think that you may not want Decree Absolute to be pronounced before your financial application is considered in case you lose some rights. I’m not sure about that but I think you need to be careful about it.

Read the legal guides and see if you can speak to Rights of Women. It’s worth trying again as they are very useful although it’s hard to get through.

      Good luck
