At school my son told the teacher he was afraid of his Dad. The school have asked that I speak with Social Services. I am in the preparation stages for leaving my husband. I am curious if making contact with them now could be beneficial (as help me and the kids with leaving) or potentially more risky.

      Hi Muddler,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for posting with your question.

Social Services are there to safeguard the wellbeing of your child so, in this situation, they should be supporting you to remove the risk to your child, which is him. If you’re in touch with your local domestic abuse service and decided you wanted to contact Social Services, they should be able to support you with some advocacy. If you’re not in touch with the local service, you could reach out to them, as well as advocacy they should be able to support you with your plan to leave. You can find your local domestic abuse service details by searching on our service directory.

You might also like to reach out to Family Rights Group with any questions you have about Social Services involvement. They support families where Social Services are involved with the children, so are specialists in this area, and they have a helpline as well as lots of information on their website.

I know that other women on the forum have been in similar situations and had input from Social Services, hopefully they will be able to share their experiences with you soon.

      Take care and keep posting,
      Lisa
