I wonder if anyone can help. The council have offered me a property but when I’ve been to view it it’s been trashed by the previous tenants. The garden is seriously overgrown, literally a jungle, all the doors and windows are boarded and the old residents belongings are littered everywhere. It’s giving me serious anxiety. Has anyone been offered the same and what will the council do to tidy it up? Thankyou!

      Hi findingnemo,

The council will not expect you to move in to this property in this condition at all, they may have just allowed you to view it to see if the size, layout and location was suitable for your needs.

The property will need to be handed to you in a condition that they would expect it to be returned in. The boardings on the windows and doors are just to protect it for now and they will have to get all of the old belongings cleared out and provide you with a clean and empty shell. It’s unlikely the garden will be given any more than a mow, but any rubbish and clutter should be removed from the garden and outbuildings too.

If you accept this property then they will probably crack on with getting it cleared up and cleaned up for you, which could still take several weeks. I know it’s not ideal to see something in this state and be able to get an exciting vision of a new home and a new life to look forward to but it won’t look like this when you get the keys.

The downside is, if you refuse this property you could be moved further down a waiting list. If you are concerned, just ask them and get it confirmed that the property will be cleared and clean when you get it.

      xx

      Hi Findingnemo

I agree, that sounds very worrying to see a place in that state, but, it will be how you want when you are there. Imagine how you will have the kitchen, smelling nice and clean with your things in, and the bathroom, all cleaned and redecorated, and relaxing in the new lounge, with possibly new carpet down and your plants and nic-naks about the place. You will transform it, and they will have cleared away all of what you saw in your viewing, clean it up and even refresh paint and so on possibly.

I hope it hasnt put you off and that you will put in for it/

      warmest wishes

      ts

Thankyou! I think it’s just hard to shift the visual of what I’ve seen. I’ve never had a council property before so I have no idea what to expect them to do. I think in my anxious state I just saw myself trying to battle with something that’s unachievable for one person.
Thank you for your kind words and reassurance x
