  I left, but had to call police several times as he kept turning up threatening and being aggressive. He was arrested and released without charge/given a PIN. But the thought of never speaking to him again breaks my heart.

  It gets easier the longer you do it. The first bit is tough. But if you can get through it, then things will be so much better.
