I just wanted to encourage other people here as I am currently enjoying volunteering in the domestic violence field. Some people might describe me as an influencer as I’m using my “expertise by experience” to influence strategy, shape policies etc. I think I’m just a person who has experienced abuse.
I’m hoping that my current volunteering actions will both help other people and be part of my own healing. I’m a busy person with caring for family members, working part time and trying a little self employment, but occasional volunteering supporting people who have experienced domestic violence is important for my identity and sense of self.

That sounds wonderful Swanlake. Well Done you. I think it’s an excellent idea for women who have experienced domestic abuse to volunteer in these support agencies (if one feels able of course). I’d love to meet someone like you who would truly understand what I’d been through.  I’m sure it will enrich your own life and healing journey too.

For a long time I wasn’t aware that I was in an abusive situation. Our abusers are cunning and manipulative aren’t they? It’s only recently that I’ve felt able to volunteer. I feel as though I could dip in and out of volunteering indefinitely as I feel able. Maybe even work in the sector for a little while if possible.

I have the impression that some people who work in domestic abuse have experienced or witnessed abuse themselves in their personal lives. Though when they are at work or volunteering the focus is on the other person, not revealing their own personal experience.
